There may be quite a few situations when sounding like someone else may come in handy. In my case, this was a professional assignment. Working for a marketing agency back in 2023, I needed to do an anonymous survey among my colleagues. To minimize the associated expenses, we decided to conduct the survey in-house, with the marketing team taking the lead.

To make sure the survey remained anonymous, we decided to try out voice-changing software. And this opened up a whole new world to me of the apps I never thought I needed.

Doing an anonymous colleague poll because your company wants to save money is a very niche experience. But, voice-changing software can come in handy in a whole range of ways.

So, I thought I’d share my experience of searching for the right tool as well as the five best voice-changing tools I’ve found.

How to Change Your Voice to Sound Like Someone Else

As I’ve said at the beginning, there may be a whole lot of different situations where you might want to alter your voice somehow. You may need to protect your identity or simply play a prank on friends, just for the fun of it.

Once you do a quick online search, you’ll see that there is lots of software out there promising to make your voice sound completely different.

There is one thing to keep in mind, though.

Although voice modulation can come in handy in certain situations, it can also be used for fraudulent purposes. For this reason, voice modulation may or may not be legal, depending on the jurisdiction.

Good to know: Is changing your voice legal?
In some cases, using voice-changing software to mask your identity can break privacy laws. The most important thing to consider here is WHY you are changing your voice.

If it’s entertainment or confidentiality, it’s most likely okay. If you are trying to deceive someone with malicious intent, it’s most likely illegal. Laws on voice modulation vary. Make sure to check the regulations on telecommunications and privacy in your location.

Moreover, laws change, especially those related to technology. Keep track of any changes to stay on the right side of the law.

Since there are many options, it might be challenging to know which voice altering software to choose. I, for instance, decided to focus on the following:

  • Is it easy to use?
  • Does it give you the ability to upload your own voice library?
  • Can you use it while making a call?
  • Does it have settings that allow you to control voice pitch?
  • Can audio files be exported in different formats?

And, based on all of the above, here are my top five.

  • Murf AI;
  • Voxal Voice Changer;
  • MorphVox;
  • Viscom Voice Changer;
  • Voicemod.

Let’s get started.

1. Murf AI

Murf AI is a text-to-speech software that offers a range of features, including text-to-voice conversion in over 20 languages, voice cloning, and AI dubbing. The platform utilizes artificial intelligence to enhance modification options, enabling users to create natural sounding voice overs for various projects.

Additionally, Murf AI seamlessly integrates with various platforms such as Canva, Google Slides, Adobe Audition, and Adobe Captivate, expanding its usability across different workflows.

For users seeking support, Murf AI offers resources including a Help page, Community forums, and detailed tutorials in the Academy section, catering to both beginners and experienced users alike.

Moreover, Murf AI provides a generously featured free version for personal use.

Creator Plan starts at $23/month ($276 billed annually).

Pros:
  • User-friendly interface, suitable for beginners;
  • Lots of audio editing tutorials and support;
  • Dubbing in over 20 languages;
  • Free starter version.
Cons:
  • Steep pricing for professional use.

2. Voxal Voice Changer

Voxal Voice Changer also has lots of positive reviews online and seems to be the default go-to program for someone who needs to change the way their voice sounds. So, it seemed like the natural choice to try it out next.

First impressions? The program uses simple terms and has an interface that is friendly to use.

Since voice modification is a rather complicated process, having an easy-to-use app like this can definitely help get over the initial learning curve.

There are two ways in which you can change your voice with the app: you can change it in real time during live calls, or you can upload the file and use the available tools to make the changes you want.

Not only can you slightly adjust how your natural voice sounds, but the software also comes with a built-in voice library. And this means you have lots of options. You can select a male, female, robotic, and even an alien voice. You will find these options on the left-hand side of the software’s main panel.

That’s not all. The app can detect and remove noise and sound distortions, making it easy to amplify your voice.

If you are a gamer, Voxal can help protect your identity since it’s supported on gaming platforms like CS:GO, Steam, and many more.

The software home-use version is free.

Pro versions start at $39.99.

Pros:
  • A simple and intuitive interface that’s easy for beginners;
  • Alters your voice in real time during live calls;
  • Comes with a wide variety of voice effects and presets;
  • Detects and removes background noise and sound distortions;
  • Supports voice modulation on popular gaming platforms and online games;
  • Offers a free version for home users.
Cons:
  • The free version has limited features;
  • Running in real-time mode may impact system performance.

3. MorphVox

If you are looking for something a bit more advanced, consider MorphVox. This is a specialized voice-changing app, mostly used by online gamers and multimedia studios. MorphVox may not be the best choice for beginners as it comes with an enhanced professional user interface.

You get access to a vast library of voice packs and sound effects. You will also be able to add custom backgrounds and sound effects.

One of the best things about the app is the large number of integrations: you can use it with Discord, Skype, online games like World of Warcraft, and more.

You can definitely use the app to alter your voice during live conversations, but it is probably better fitted for entertainment.

The program has a free home-use version and a Pro version starting at $39.99.

Pros:
  • Excels at changing voices to sound like the opposite gender or a different age;
  • Capable of processing voice changes in real time;
  • Great choice for users looking to add playful elements to their online interaction;
  • Designed to be lightweight.
Cons:
  • Fewer voice changing options;
  • More focused on entertainment rather than professional voice editing.

4. Viscom Voice Changer

Although you can only edit pre-recorded audio files with this software (you cannot use it during live calls or voice recording), it has the advantage of being light and fast. The audio file you create with it will also have very little noise or sound distortion.

It supports only three file formats, namely .wav, .wma, and .mp3, with .wav being the primary format. This might not present much of a setback since you can use a converter if you need to edit a pre-recorded audio file that has an unsupported format. But you should note that this may cause some quality loss.

Viscom comes with a variety of options for voice editing. You can change the speed, frequency, and amplitude. There are also different voice types you can choose from.

Viscom Voice Changer is free.

5. Voicemod

Voicemod is a great option if you are looking for wide compatibility. When I set out to plan my anonymous survey, I wasn’t sure what platform I would use to hold it. So, Voicemod seemed like a good and safe choice, as it works with popular chat apps like Skype and TeamSpeak. There is a custom voice generator in the Voicemod—so, you can personalize how you want to sound and add sound effects.

Voicemod is also compatible with lots of games and gaming platforms. This wasn’t exactly what I was looking for at the time. But it was good to know that if I learned how to use the program, I would have other uses for it outside of work. You can use Voicemod with CS:GO, Minecraft, Fortnite, Rocket League, Discord, and more.

Voicemod has a free version.

To download the full version, you will need to make a one-time payment of $95.99.

Pros:
  • Compatible with lots of chat and gaming platforms;
  • You can personalize what you sound like;
  • Easy to use for beginners.
Cons:
  • Some features are only available on the paid version;
  • Expensive for casual use.

Tips: How to Sound Like Someone Else Naturally

Now, another thing I noticed is that no matter what tool you use to change your voice, it may end up sounding robotic or unnatural. Here’s what worked for me to fix that:

  • If you want to sound like someone else naturally, don’t forget about pitch. You can practice varying your pitch to sound different.
  • When we speak naturally, our voice has emotional undertones. Use them when modulating your voice.
  • You can experiment with adding subtle background noises or breath sounds to make the final result sound more natural.

How to Change Your Voice to Sound Like Someone Else: Explained
